November 4, 2007 through Cheer loud, cheer proud! As the recent movie Friday Night Lights demonstrated, high school football is something Americans take very seriously. Photographer Brian Finke takes it seriously too. Created with both affection and respect, his documentation of the megaphone world of football players and cheerleaders captures this quintessentially American sub-culture: crowd-pleasing, stunt-building girls and pigskin-tossing boys, in full adolescent throttle. Finke's skillful and vivid images were made during a two-year period in which he roamed the country on the trail of the top teams. These serendipitous photographs take you into the moment: the wins and losses; the intensity of friendships, rivalries, mentoring, and competition; and the cultivation of self-image and self-worth that is at the core of adolescence. Brian Finke graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 1998, and his work has been featured in The New Yorker, Esquire, Time, and Newsweek. His photographs have been exhibited internationally, and are included in collections worldwide. This exhibition samples both bodies of work—football players and cheerleaders—and is accompanied by a full-color monograph published by Umbrage Editions. A L S O S E E
