First Union Gallery
In 1936, writer James Agee (1909-1953) and photographer Walker Evans
(1903-1975) visited the home of a sharecropper family in Hale County,
Alabama. For the next 21 days they produced a collaborative work aimed
directly at the Great Depression's social problems, while also pushing the
limits of literature and photography. Their 1941 book, Let Us Now Praise
Famous Men, is one of the most important studies of American cultural
history and a milestone in the history of photography. The exhibition
features 90 vintage photographs by Walker Evans as well as manuscripts and
other original documents.
Sponsored by DRAPER-DBS, Inc.
This exhibition and educational programs have been funded in part by a
grant from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.
