Fred Beans Gallery, Doylestown
This rousing tour through the golden era of American musicals showcased the
stars who gave voice and vision to the Broadway and Hollywood tradition
over the past 100 years. Named for Cole Porter's 1936 hit,
Red, Hot and Blue recreated the diverse ethnic and cultural influences
that formed this unique American art form. Through video, photographs, posters
and biographies the exhibition highlighted the showmanship of stage luminaries
such as Al Jolson, Ethel Merman, Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire and
Ginger Rogers, as well as such lyricists as Bucks County's
Oscar Hammerstein II.
Red, Hot & Blue: A Salute to American Musicals was developed and
organized by the National Portrait Gallery, the National Museum of American
History, and the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service.
The exhibition has been made possible, in part, through the generous support
of Turner Classic Movies.
