Christoph Spath: Inner Reflection
November 18, 2006 - February 25, 2007

Christoph Spath was born in Stuttgart, Germany, and studied architecture and stone sculpture in Aachen and Duesseldorf. In 1982 he settled in Vermont, where he lived and worked for 15 years as a Sculptor in Residence at the Vermont Marble Exhibit and as a teacher of sculpture and stone carving. In 1997 he became the head of the newly formed Johnson Atelier Stone Division in Mercerville, New Jersey. His work has been exhibited extensively throughout the United States and Europe.

Spath's sculptures are primarily carved in stone, which he often combines with glass and light. He is especially interested in forms of ancient origin such as the column, the portal, the wheel, and simple tool shapes. His sculptures start out as a simple block of stone; as he begins to carve, he searches for a balance between the natural stone and the emerging form. "The glass filled voids that often appear in my work represent the inner space," he says, "the soul if you will."
